1957 – 2017

Dirk Gail Payne, 59 passed away February 8, 2017 from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He fought this battle for 9 months with enormous strength, courage, grace and passion. Dirk was born in Salt Lake City on October 23, 1957 to Gail and Dorothy Payne. He spent his childhood in Colorado until the family returned to Salt Lake City. Dirk graduated from Cottonwood High School where he met and married the love of his life Melanie. Dirk was a lover of fast cars (which meant Mustangs of course!). He loved to pilot small aircraft and never felt more free than when he was flying. He loved taking his MANY motorcycles on long mountain rides. He was a fan of the Denver Broncos from their inception through both good and bad times (Go Broncos!!!). Dirk was highly intelligent and was a self taught computer programmer. He loved to work. He had a love of the unknown and unexplained, especially anything related to space. He was a Trekkie and proud of it!

We were 2 of the most fortunate people to have found each other again to live out our fairy tale. Leukemia has stolen him from me way too soon, but we know this is only for a short time. We know we will see each other again when Charon the Ferryman has conveyed our souls across the river. Dirk…I can truly say you have always been, and you are now more than ever, the man of my dreams. Rest well my love. I will miss you with every breath. When it is my time…shine the light to show me the way……I love you always and through eternity.

Dirk is survived by his wife Melanie, daughters Nichelle and Mollie, Grandson Brandon, siblings Darrell, Becky and Flip (Shauna), Nephews Kyle (Kristine) and Flipper (Tiffany), Nieces Neecole (Matt) and Candice (Mike), grand nephews and nieces Kaylee, Kian, Amber, Pierce, Presley and Mason.
The family wishes to thank our most amazing Home Health Care Nurse Jackie, the doctors and nurses at The Huntsman Cancer Institute including the BMT Unit Staff, Clinic 2C Staff and Dr. Kovacsovics, Andie, Kathleen and Diedre. Dr. Austin Poole, you are our superhero and will always hold a special place in the heart of our family.

Visitation will held at City View Memorium, 1001 East 11th Avenue on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 6-8:00 pm with graveside service at Manti City Cemetery, noon, Saturday, February 11, 2017. Luncheon to be held afterwards. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Dirk’s name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).
