John Shaw Coady III, 67, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2016 surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer.  John was born on March 22, 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio to John Shaw Coady, II, and Mary Stremel Coady.  The family later moved to Deadwood, South Dakota, where the Coadys ran a cattle ranch.  John has been a cowboy ever since.  He was always dressed in at least one of the following:  a cowboy hat, cowboy boots or one of his 55 Tommy Bahama shirts.

John was an all-state football player for Deadwood High School, an expert skier, and a “four point” tennis player.  At the University of South Dakota, he earned degrees in geology and English.   John was a stock trader for forty years with the firms Wilson-Davis, Johnson Bowles and JCBradford.

John married Lesley Peters in 1978.  Later divorced.  John and Lesley had two sons, John Shaw Coady, IV, and Aaron Coady.  He married Karen Furgis in 1986.  Later divorced.  After 28 years apart, they rekindled their romance in 2014 and have been inseparable ever since.

John was an excellent cook.  On any night of the week, you could drop by and he would be in the midst of “whipping up” a feast, oftentimes prime rib or his famous noodle and meat dish, aptly named “Coadyaroni.”  He was a connoisseur of fine wine and shared the finer things in life with his family and friends.  John had many close, lifelong friends who will dearly miss him. John lived life according to his 3 principles of living: (1) Life’s too short to drink bad wine; (2) There are only two kinds of great music, one being Country and the other Western; and finally, (3) “I’m not here for a long time, but a good time!”

            Preceded in death by his parents and son John.  Survived by wife Karen; son Aaron; granddaughter Mayayla Smith Coady; brother Patrick Coady (Joann), nieces Emily and Sara Coady; niece Anna Thoreson (Michael); and nephew Michael Furgis.

Services at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 300 South 300 West at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5.  Viewing at 11:00 a.m.  Burial to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.  Special thanks to the staff at St. Mark’s Hospital and Father Elias Koucos.
